Scarab 8 metre trimaran

This design is for intermediate builders. Some boat building experience would be helpful.
The Scarab 8 is similar in concept to the 670, plywood construction and with centreboards in the floats. Boat build using Stitch and Glue construction

Accommodation consists of a small double berth and three singles, space for a small galley and a porta-potti. The boat was designed to be built using multichine stitch and glue plywood epoxy resin and fibreglass with a pivoting transom hung rudder and fibreglass/epoxy beams built using a top hat section
The ring frame and folding system is structural grade aluminium.

The Scarab 8 is designed to be constructed in 9mm marine plywood. The main hull has 5 panels each side from the gunwhale to the keel. The shell is covered on the inside with unidirectional fibreglass and on the outside with biaxial glass. The floats are constructed in two halves split along the keel and deck centreline. 6mm marine ply is used for the floats with 5 panels each side glassed inside with unidirectional glass and outside with biaxial. Each float has a fin case built in to accommodate a pivoting asymmetrical fin.

The boat has a pivoting transom hung rudder and fibreglass/epoxy beams built using a top hat section.

The internal structure bunk tops and risers, cockpit floor, seats are all 9mm plywood filleted to the hull shelf.
Ring frames fore and aft to support the beams are fabricated from welded flat bar aluminium bonded into the hull. The folding system uses 6061 grade T6 temper aluminium for the arms, and 316 grade stainless steel for the pivots. The arms and pivots are best made by a specialist alloy fabricator.

Accommodation consists of a small double berth and three singles, space for a small galley and a porta-potti. The forward double bunk has a watertight stowage below. There is space, port and starboard, just forward of the main bulkhead for a stove and sink with an ice box under the stove. The space under the cockpit can be used as a single bunk if required. Stowage is provided under all bunks and the settee for clothing, food and drinks.

The Scarab 8.0 will appeal to sailors who are after an economical, easy to build trailable trimaran. The rig is manageable but powerful enough to provide excellent performance for racing and the accommodation is sufficient for cruising for a couple or small family.
